Velvac Introduces Blind Spot Detection System at RVIA

"Velvac Inc., a supplier of RV vision systems, announced the launch of its Blind Spot Detection System, capable of providing added awareness for drivers to warn of vehicles and objects in their blind spots. According to a press release, the company will be showcasing the new product, along with its 360 Surround View system, at next week’s National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Ky., in Booth No. 48.
Blind Spot Detection and 360 Surround View, which provides one continuous image of the space around the RV for slow speed maneuvering, are both vision safety add-on options to the Road-iQ Platform. In addition to Velvac’s exhibit, the products will also be on display in REV Group’s American Coach Dream and in Road-iQ’s “Innovation RV” parked just outside the Kentucky Exposition Center.
Velvac’s blind spot detection system uses the cameras in the existing passenger and driver side mirrors to detect vehicles and objects in an RV’s blind spot. When an object is detected, an icon flashes to warn the driver of an oncoming vehicle on the left or right side. To accomplish this, the blind spot video feed is passed through the Road-iQ video data server. If the software detects an object in the cameras’ field of view, it returns a command to activate the mirror icons.

Director of RV Sales and Marketing Paul Hughes stated, “As prevalent as BSD technology is in passenger vehicles, Velvac understands that the evolution of this technology will naturally meet the needs of RV drivers.  Our camera-based Blind Spot Detection technology will provide drivers with an additional warning while changing lanes to increase their awareness and safety. Because this system utilizes Velvac cameras currently in the mirrors, blind spot detection serves as the next logical step for OEM’s towards increasing driver awareness.”

Velvac’s 360 Surround View system, which is available as an add-on option to the Road-iQ Platform,  provides drivers with a continuous bird’s eye view from the top of their RV, and relays that image to the RV’s monitor. Designed for slow speed driving and maneuvering, 360 Surround increases driver confidence and awareness of objects that would otherwise be out of view.
At the center of Blind Spot Detection and 360 Surround View is Road-iQ, is an all-in-one vehicle vision technology platform. This system acts as the primary tool to enhance a driver’s vision by relaying and recording real-time video from up to seven cameras to a driver’s dash-mounted monitor or iPad. In addition to these offerings, Road-iQ allows for easy add-on options, including remote live viewing, comfort controls, Wi-Fi hotspot and recording."
